OSTEOPATHY FOR BABIES, TODDLERS AND CHILDREN

Osteopathy can be a safe and effective form of hands-on treatment for newborn

babiesand children of all ages. Our Osteopaths apply gentle, non-manipulative

techniques to not only promote health, but also to alleviate symptoms of specific

conditions.

Pregnancy and birth are incredible, but physically demanding experiences for

women and their babies. The stresses and forces on an infant’s body while

in-utero and during birth can result in strains of their soft and immature

musculoskeletal system. These forces depend on the position of the baby during

pregnancy, length of labour, presentation at birth, and what, if any, interventions

might have been required e.g. caesarian section, use of forceps or ventouse etc.

The resulting strains may affect your baby’s sleeping, breathing, feeding, digestion, movement or development.

Things to look for:

Irritability and difficulty sleeping

Excessive crying, restlessness, inability to settle

Feeding difficulties in latching or suckling

Colic, reflux or digestive problems

Asymmetry in head shape (plagiocephaly)

Musculoskeletal and postural imbalances

Movement difficulties transitioning to rolling, crawling, walking etc.

Favouring one side in rolling or turning head

Structural imbalances from disorders like asthma, illness or recurrent infection

OSTEOPATHY FOR ADOLESCENTS

During puberty the whole body changes dramatically over a relatively short period. There is also the growing workload of study and school along with the use of computers or tablets, and we see a rise in poor posture and related tension in the body, and a propensity for certain injuries.

We can treat and manage specific conditions including:

Headaches

Muscle sprains/tears

Back pain associated with carrying heavy school bags

Neck pain associated with study and use of computers

Playground injuries or injuries from falls or sports

Injuries from intense or repetitive training (rowing, tennis, rugby, gymnastics, netball, swimming)

Specific conditions common in adolescence like knee pain, Osgood Schlatters, Severs, Shuermanns

DID YOU KNOW OSTEOPATHY HAS INFLUENCES BEYOND THE MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM?

Manual treatment has been shown to support immune function and improve well-being as well as physical health. Whether your child’s immune system just needs a little support to get over a cold or infection, or there is an underlying medical condition, Osteopathy can be an effective adjunct treatment when combined with mainstream medicine.
